Role Overview

This role is primarily focused on helping a development team effectively and
efficiently deliver high-quality product and services. As a Quality Engineer you’ll
work with delivery teams to help facilitate the successful release of products and innovations to our customers. From the inception of the idea, all the way through getting it into the hands of our users - where appropriate you can be involved every step of the way - analyzing the risk of implementation, how a new feature will fit into our existing ecosystem, how it’ll be received by users, and, of course, facilitating the shipping of quality software.
You’ll have the opportunity to not only test our web and mobile applications, but also the inner workings of the Betfair system. Whereas some organizations shy away from testing at each level of their technology stack, Betfair actively encourages it. From service configurations to databases and APIs - there’s always something new and challenging to test. If you’ve ever been frustrated as a tester, not getting involved early enough, not having access to source code or even developers in order to fully understand how a system should work - then Betfair is for you - we actively encourage open collaboration between all members of our development team

Prior Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic understanding of software testing concepts and why quality matters in software development.

  • Some exposure to manual testing — whether through coursework, personal projects, or prior experience.

  • Familiarity with at least one programming or scripting language (e.g. JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, or Python) is a plus.

  • Awareness of what APIs are and a general understanding of how web applications communicate.

  • Basic understanding of version control concepts (e.g. git) — even if only used in a course or personal project.

  • An understanding of agile methodologies at a conceptual level.

  • Clear and confident communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • A keen eye for detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving.

  • A strong drive to learn, improve, and ask questions.

  • Willingness to speak up, share ideas, and challenge assumptions.

  • A genuine passion for helping build high-quality software.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Apply basic software testing techniques to explore and validate applications under test.

  • Learn and apply common testing heuristics to uncover defects and edge cases.

  • Report issues clearly, including steps to reproduce, expected vs. actual results, and a basic assessment of severity.

  • Carry out manual testing across different parts of a system — UI, APIs, and integrations — with guidance from senior team members.

  • Collaborate with developers to understand what has already been covered at unit level and where additional testing adds value.

  • Contribute to writing and reviewing test cases, user stories, and acceptance criteria.

  • Participate in regression testing efforts to help ensure existing functionality remains stable.

  • Begin to explore test automation under the mentorship of senior QA engineers.

  • Support release activities and assist with coordination as directed.

  • Contribute to team discussions on quality, raise questions, and help identify gaps in requirements early.

  • Document test activities, results, and observations clearly so others can follow your work.
